Energy requirements during weight loss and weight maintenance of two morbidly obese cats
نویسنده
چکیده
Conclusions Weight loss by reducing food intake and by the use of a high protein, high fiber diet are very effective, even in morbidly obese cats. Client communication and proper follow up are key factors for successful obesity management. Metabolic adaptations occur during weight loss and weight maintenance, resulting in altered enery requirents, which therefore requires lifelong follow up and adaptations in food intake.

Long-term follow-up after weight management in obese cats*
Feline obesity is a prevalent medical disease and the main therapeutic strategy is dietary energy restriction. However, at present there are no data regarding long-term outcome in this species. The purpose of the present study was to investigate if, as in other species, some cats regain weight following successful weight loss, and to identify any influencing factors in a cohort of client-owned ...

Weight rebound after successful weight loss is a well-known phenomenon in humans and dogs, possibly due to the fact that energy restriction improves metabolic efficiency, reducing post-weight-loss maintenance energy requirements (MER). The aim of the present study was to estimate post-weight-loss MER in obese pet dogs that had successfully lost weight and did not subsequently rebound. A total o...
متن کاملThe Role of Predictive Factors in Weight Loss Maintenance in Obese People
Background and Objectives: In obese people, 5-10% reduction in initial weight can decrease the obesity induced risks. Therefore, it is important to identify the predictive factors effective in weight loss maintenance. The present research was conducted to determine the role of important predictive factors in weight loss maintenance. Methods: For this purpose, a total of 200 women with obesity,...

Obesity is a major health problem in cats and a risk factor for diabetes. It has been postulated that cats are always gluconeogenic and that the rise in obesity might be related to high dietary carbohydrates. We examined the effect of a high-carbohydrate/low-protein (HC) and a high-protein/low-carbohydrate (HP) diet on glucose and fat metabolism during euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp, adipocy...
